Was noticing this section of the forums was looking a little...empty.
SO, here is a couple books that I've read that are Japanese themed, but written by an English author. Shogun - James Clavell - English sailor is caught up in a storm, the boat is destroyed, and he ends up in a Japanese harbor and taken prisoner. Through sheer battles of will between him and his captors, he has to survive, find his crew, and even learn japanese in an Shogunistic society. Dont let its sheer size (a whopping 800 pages, some editions actually in TWO books) get to you, the book is very well done. Word of warning though, LOTS of flashbacks. Almost every character in the book has some 2-3 page flashback history. If you want a good idea on things though, if you've ever seen "The Last Samurai", the plot of that is pretty similar. Just... a few hundred years before that, lol Another book, by the name of Rising Sun, who's author I forget, is more modern. And if you can get past the fact that one of the main characters was played by Sean Connery in a movie by the same title, or that the other main character was played by Wesley Snipes when you are trying to put together your own image of these characters, you'll do fine. But anyways, this one takes place is a more modern 1990's setting of the Japanese War machine known as the economy. Where big buisness is a big thing, and nothing like adding in a little murder to the mix to really get things going! Its defiently a cop book, but they dont use alot of misc terms luckally. Enjoy =3 |
